Before we dive into the specifics of how to install roofing ridge cap, here are some notes to keep in mind:. The cost of the metal ridge cap will depend upon the gauge, type of paint finish, and the size of the ridge cap. Lighter gauge ridge cap will cost less than a heavier gauge.
Also painted ridge cap will cost more than galvanized or galvalume ridge cap. Installing eave trim on your metal roof starts with using the right tools and having the correct supplies on hand. Before you get started on the installation process, be sure you have all the tools necessary:.
We will walk you through the steps for installing both ventilated ridge caps and closed ridge caps using our SL concealed fastener metal roofing system.
Installation of a closed ridge cap is fairly straightforward. You will need to make sure you prep the Z-trim underneath before you install the ridge cap.
Follow the instructions below:. Next, we're going to start working on the vented ridge in this application for SL Since every building and house is different, it's important to evaluate a building based on the construction, what's taking place inside the roof cavity and what kind of insulation is used.
Generally, there's a lot of confusion about venting soffit and ridge versus gable venting. So one important note is to make sure that you're using either a ridge vent in combination with open soffits or you're using gable venting, but that you're not combining the two.
If you combine the two, cross airflow cancels each other out and you end up with a much less effective venting of your roof cavity.
In this particular installation, we have open soffits, so we're going to open the ridgeline so that we can install our panel and the profile vent material. You are ready to install the vented ridge cap. To install it, use an anchor clip system and tape seal on the underside. The first thing that you want to do is make a mark so that you know where to position the profile vent. Then, put the ridge cap in place, mark the tops of the ribs and line it up with the ridgeline.
Using a pencil, make a mark on top of the panel ribs. Fasten the ridge to the panels below. In the example illustration below, screws are placed so as to go through the center of every other major roof panel rib. Continue on down the ridge until you reach its end.
It may be necessary to trim the final section of ridge cap to fit your ridge length. The steps above explain steel roofing ridge cap installation for the most common metal roof and cap designs.
There are other types as well, such as standing seam and shingle-style panels, vented ridge cap, skylight ridge cap, and formed ridge cap. Details of how to install these special types are given in the instructions that should come with them, and in other articles. Please inquire on your selection before ordering.
Metal Roofing Closures To keep debris, insects and blowing rain from getting in under the gaps between the panels and the ridge cap, closure strips are used. See the illustration below. Set the piece of ridge cap aside, and snap a chalk line between the marks.
