And well, i do LOVE books that take you in a journey, especially one of self-discovery like this one, you see how our heroine "grows" and how the interacts she have with others do change their lives too, not only her own.

Anyway, The Life List, is especially a story of love The bond between Elizabeth and Brett was just so beautiful to read, and i admit i laughed and cried with it. Loved it, Loved it!! I want tell much more, because I don't want to spoil anyone experience while reading this book, i'll just say that I highly recommend it and it's definitely on my favorites!

And well, just go find your old life list or make a new one Brett a woman with a male name she constantly finds herself explaining is devastated when her mother passes away. However, the real shock comes for her with the reading of her mother's will.

She is to complete a list of tasks in order to be eligible for her inheritance. This book was quite heart warming, while Brett struggles with grief and coming to terms with the conditions in her mother's will.

But will the tasks force Brett to actually start to live her own life? This was heading for 4 stars Brett a woman with a male name she constantly finds herself explaining is devastated when her mother passes away.

This was heading for 4 stars from me, but the way the end of the book wrapped up was disappointing and very quick, so only 3 stars now. View 2 comments. Jun 13, Sherri Thacker rated it it was amazing Shelves: 5-star-books-that-i-loved.

I truly loved this book. From the first page to the last page. It was like a breath of fresh air. Didn't want it to end and I kept reading and reading not wanting to put it down. Hard to believe this is the authors debut book. I will definitely be waiting patiently for her next book. Highly recommend!! Loved it!!!! I devoured this one. A great heroine, a strange will, a seemingly impossible quest. The book has real heart.

Aug 06, Olga Godim rated it liked it Shelves: mainstream. Without a doubt, this book is a powerful work of fiction, stirring a bittersweet brew of emotions in its reader. Beautifully written, it tells a poignant story of a mother-daughter love transcending death.

Stricke Without a doubt, this book is a powerful work of fiction, stirring a bittersweet brew of emotions in its reader. While her two brothers inherit millions, Brett inherits zilch. Or rather, her inheritance is delayed and conditional. To become eligible, she must fulfill a life list , which she herself had compiled when she was Making her life even more interesting, all the items on the list must be completed within one year.

And, as the finishing touch, in her last, posthumous action, Elizabeth decreed that Brett must be fired from her marketing position with the family firm. Or does it? I think love should include respect and acceptance. When you love someone, you grant her the rights to choose her own path and to make her own mistakes. You support unconditionally, whatever she chooses. They evoke such notions as contempt and mockery, not love. Within one year too.

As if love would adhere to schedule. In the book, Elizabeth supposedly knew that her daughter was unhappy in her personal and professional life. She made her will into a weapon, serving one purpose: to steer her daughter into a different orbit, to enforce her happiness what an oxymoron!

I see an autocratic woman who tries to control her daughter from beyond the grave. Unaccountably, Brett allows it. The novel follows Brett, as she struggles to accomplish all the items on her prescribed list within her crazy deadline. Her millionaire mother left her penniless. Why does Brett believe the words and not the deeds?

Why does she continue with this impossible charade of her life list? My stomach knotted. Even though her mother was dead, Brett still remained the obedient, spineless daughter she has always been. And her love for her mother never diminished. She writes Brett as an altruist, a goody-good with an infinite capacity for love.

It infuriated me that such a great writer would create such a lie. About love, no less. I feel like a cynical, cold hearted rake for not liking this one see, getting into Bridgerton mode already -I know, I know, the book has nothing to do with "rakes" or historical reading Most of my friends who have read this loved it and shed a tear I found it boring and I had to force myself to finish it.

I thought ending was stupid - yeah, yeah, "it was cute" not really. Maybe lockdown has addled my brain as my reading has definitely been "off" this year. Brett came across as a bit immature and annoying. The way everything fell into place in the end was a bit too cheesy and sugar-coated. I don't have much more to say. Halfway through I mentioned that I was "half intrigued and half bored" by the book Plus it took me a week to finish it It rarely takes me a week to finish a book.

I even finished Ulysses in less than a week insert sarcasm and eye roll and a private joke that Himself would get! Jun 09, Brian rated it really liked it. I should have known from the purplish cover and the flower, that this book was a chick lit book. I dove in bravely, ready for shallowness, and then I was somewhat surprised.

THe plot is about a woman who loses her mother, who is her best friend to cancer. The mother leaves her other two children with their inheritances, but for the unfortunately named Brett, she must go through a list of things she wanted to accomplish in her life that she wrote as a child and do them all to get it. The story re I should have known from the purplish cover and the flower, that this book was a chick lit book. The story reminds me of other chick lit books, but the main character was fun and well written, and the book had a few sad moments, and a few funny ones as well.

I especially liked the character of Carrie and her friendship with Brett. Nov 27, Trewen rated it it was ok Shelves: audio , chick-lit. I just wanted it to be over. There are so many reasons I didn't like the book. I thought it was overly dramatic and contrived.

In fact, I didn't really like any of them except for maybe the attorney. This possibly had to do with the reader of the audio book.

The premise of a life list is fun but the fact the list was made by a 14 year old girl was silly. Top it off with the stipulation of completing it in 1 year or you don't get your inheritance is plain ridiculous. I'm pretty good at suspending disbelief but this made me think the mother had a cruel side. There are too many obligatory characters.

The latinos, the african americans, the lesbians, the gold-digging trashy friend. All described with derogatory traits. These were plot devices to make us believe the main character was an open-hearted saint.

Where it was supposed to be witty or funny, it came across as sarcastic or rude. Again, this may have been the fault of the audio book reader. I don't know where all the 4 and 5 star ratings came from. Maybe if I would have read the book myself instead of listening to it, I would have liked it.

But I don't think so View all 3 comments. Feb 17, Jan rated it it was ok. A life list that her mother had retrieved from a wastebasket 20 years earlier, a life list that Brett no longer much cares about if she ever did. And, no spoiler here, everything turns out really swell for Brett. But on the way we have to endure big coincidences, one-dimensional characters, and a high-strung protagonist who spends a lot of time weeping.

Nope, definitely not my thing. May 03, Ann rated it it was amazing Shelves: first-reads , romance , contemporary , chick-lit.

The Life List is a must-read for every woman. We all become a little too comfortable in our lives, making the safe choice, never taking any risks, and settling. Spielman's work makes you question certain areas in your life, exactly what a great novel should do. It inspires you to reexamine your own life, to determine whether you are making the most of it.

I really wish I wrote a life list when I was a teenager. It would have been really interesting to see how much I have changed. But, it's never too late. Where's a pen? Let's see Jul 19, Scott Southard rated it really liked it. And as a father of a little girl, I find that separation disappointing. It is , people. The human experience. What the book actually is, for both genders, is a fun, insightful and sometimes very moving book about self-discovery.

And yes, this dude was moved by moments in this book. Inspired by a list of wishes that Brett created while as a teenager, her mother has come up with an alternative to what Brett thought she wanted. Through her will, her mother forces poor Brett to check off the uncompleted entries on that old list before she can inherit the fortune.

And Brett has only one year to do it. Some of the points seem easy to do, like get a dog, while others sound daunting even for those with not having a fortune on the line, like fall in love and have a baby.

Oh, and she also needs a horse. The Life List is a book made for a long car drive or a day at the beach. And while it is fun, with some surprises, there are some pretty emotional passages in it as well.

Brett is grieving her mother throughout the book and she experiences the different stages of it. Also, some of the people she meets are going through hard painful times of their own. One of the impressive things Spielman has done in her debut novel is create a very realistic character in her heroine. By the end of the story, you will feel you know Brett, she is a friend, someone you can call, or at least she feels that authentic.

I really feel the need to apologize, but I connected like zero percent with this book. I was not a fan of Brett, who was whiny and immature all the time. I know that she was grieving but she was also 34 years old. Tbh, she behaved like a spoiled, superficial brat. The people she let be in her life were jerks. For This book may let me won the award for the most eye-rolling through a single book. For example Andrew. And she lets such a jerk be her boyfriend? So now let me get started on the whole list thing.

I found it to be a very nice idea at the beginning, but then it just made me angrier with every page. The goals on that list were ridiculous, for example that baby-thing.

What kind of crazy is this? And to say that Elizabeth only wants the best for Brett, why the hell did she let her grow up the way she did? When Brett was the one taking care of her during her illness, her mother is not capable of honesty? I found that very hard to believe. Last but not least, let me speak about the men issues. I start with the obvious one. Why does Brett even need a man? I would rather say that she needs to learn how to live for herself. Now my problems with all of the relationships: She can not be alone, and you can see that on every single page.

So what is this? A love pentagram? For somebody who hates love triangles it was torture. Actually, I don't know what I should say about this book to do it a justice, because in my opinion it was a wonderful book. I read a lot, really, but it is only from time to time that I find a book that I love so much from the very beginning to the very end and which captures my attention and has me so hooked. I have actually stayed almost the whole night yesterday to finish it, I couldn't put it down.

It is a beautiful story. It has beautiful characters, it has beautiful plot. It's funny - I lau Actually, I don't know what I should say about this book to do it a justice, because in my opinion it was a wonderful book. It's funny - I laughed a lot, but I have also cried, crocodile tears, because there were moments so, so sad, but all the same so, so beautiful.

The main character Brett is a great person. Lovely, funny, clever, warm, friendly and loyal. Her life list was fantastic.

I have read enough book about life lists and to - do lists to know that the list was really a good one. Some of the points were ridiculous, some were very, very wise and it was a real pleasure to read how Brett is trying to achieve all the points. Which was not always so easy. And Brett is so real, her feelings are so real, she can't help being jealous, she can't help feeling alone, she can't help feeling so torn between disappointment, hope and love to her mother.

She grows as the plot develops and it was great to grow with her. The other characters were brilliant as well, and the one that I have closed in my heart so much was Zoe. There was not a lot about her but that what we got is enough. Brett has her way with the men and we have some of them being introduced to us but I must honestly admit that I was not expecting THIS ending. I have not seen it coming, really. The writing was so easy, gripping and interesting. I have enjoyed every single word of this book.

It has romance, humour, drama, everything that a girl could ask for. I would go so far and say that it is a must - read for every chick - lit fan. I'm sorry, but my words just can't describe how much I loved this book. It has touched my soul, it has touched all my feelings. Full of emotions, warm and full of hope. One of the best books that I have ever read. Waiting for the second Lori's novel. I have received a copy of this book from publisher via NetGalley.

No, but now I am motivated to get on them. I highly recommend this book! I seem to be in the minority in that I thought this book was just ok. After her mother passes away, protagonist 34 yr old Brett, must complete a "life list" she created as a 12yr old before she can collect her inheritance.

I loved the premise of the story, but I think the fact that Brett blamed everything on her mother, and did not stand up for herself kept me from really enjoying the book. Even though I thoug I seem to be in the minority in that I thought this book was just ok. Even though I thought it was somewhat predictable, there were a couple of twists that I did not see coming, but liked. I liked the secondary characters alot, and I did get hooked enough to finish the book. I must say, I was very happy with the ending, which I did not see coming.

Feb 17, Joan Nelson rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Definitely. Lori has made her parents very proud. It is hard not to boast about her accomplishments. I have read many books, and this one rates right up there with the best. Right from the beginning, it caught my interest and held it all the way through until the very end.

I so enjoyed this book! The Life List captures the spirit of remembering what was once important to you and not letting fear stand in the way of completing one's goals. Thirty-four-year-old Brett Bohlinger has received this very gift from her late mother. Brett is surprised at her mother's stipulation but decides to take the daunting task at hand seriously. Brett's life is forever changed for the good as she works through these items. Her life wasn't ever necessarily bad but she wasn't her best self She meets amazing people during her journey and betters herself through the act of helping others.

Lori Nelson Spielman writes a beautiful story and I had a very hard time putting it down. It's just a great book! I had very few complaints and the ones I had were mild. I gave The Life List 4. This is her first novel.
