File sharing works between the XP PCs. However I am simply unable to affect the "Password protected sharing setting" in the Network and Sharing Center.
I check the radio button to turn it off and i get a UAC dialog window to click through, the mouse cursor spins for a short while as if windows is pretending to do something but the password protected sharing setting is still on. I've tried disabling Avira Antivir. I've enabled the guest account and explicitly set its password to an empty string with net user Guest "" Nothing helps. Suddenly those silly promps for user name and password go away when accessing Win 7 share from XP machine and it behaves more like XP file sharing without asking for Usernames and Passwords.

Hi, I had been through the process you descibe many many times.
Interestingly, I found out by accident, you can type any text in the username box, leave password box blank and it will then grant access each and every time untill the XP machine is re-booted, then it would prompt for username and password again.
I really wish there was a simple file share mode on Win 7. KamaL n00b. Joined Feb 9, Messages HI there guys I'm on a local network, a normal Workgroup, and running Windows XP.. I wanted to do a simple thing, which turned out to be quite complicated: All I want to to share a drive from my Pc ot the whole network, so can access oit from another computer on the network, but most of all, I want it to be Password protected I tried everything, and asked lots of people, but I simply couldn't.
I could actually make it Private, I mean not being able to access it at all, but it's not what I'm searching for. I tried through the advanced file sharing, but I'm sure I'm missing something Is it possible?? Thanx in Advance TrueBuckeye Most valuable "member". Create a folder that you want to share. Right click, properties. Click the "View" tab. Click the check box to enable simple file sharing. When you do, other users in the same network work group can open your shared folders without providing a password.
If your login screen has a password, this is still in force. Right-click the shared folder.
