It isn't quite on the same level as a mainline entry but served as a pretty decent warm-up act for Final Fantasy XV, which was released the following year.
For context, this is a game that was first released in for the PlayStation 1 , so bringing it up to somewhere that's even close to modern-day remaster standards was no easy feat for the team behind the project. This is probably because many see it as the black sheep of the family, with very few people holding it in the same high regard as the series' sixth, seventh, ninth, and tenth entries. It's a bit like Kingdom Hearts , but exclusively for the Final Fantasy franchise; in that the two main heroes travel to regions from across the mainline entries in the series as part of the game's central narrative.
In terms of gameplay, World Of Final Fantasy is a bit like Pokemon , with players able to catch and battle miniature versions of some of the series' many iconic monsters. Granted, there's nowhere near as much depth as there is in a traditional Pokemon game, but, for a Final Fantasy title, it's still incredibly unique. Final Fantasy XV spent over a decade in the oven and, as a result, went through many changes during its time in development. Whether all of the hype — not to mention all of the money that was spent creating the game — was really worth it is a matter for debate, though there's a pretty strong argument for the answer being "yes.
Final Fantasy XV did the series right ; providing it with its first true open-world adventure. Then there's the innovative new battle system, which would later go on to form the basis of the one used in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a remaster of the series' twelfth entry and was released around the same time as the game's tenth anniversary.
It adds a surprising amount of new content, while also tidying up the graphics and menus and providing some much-needed quality of life updates.
Seventeen years on, and the game was celebrated again with a somewhat basic remaster, which offers up some visual upgrades as well as cheats for things like fast-forwarding and making the party invincible. Visually, the game looks almost as good as the PC version and the inclusion of Crossplay means that PS4 players can play with their friends even if their playing on a PS5 or Windows machine. For fans of the series who are also partial to the MMO genre, XIV and its many excellent expansions really is a no-brainer.
Save for a handful of quality of life upgrades, it's an incredibly basic remaster. It does, however, allow players to experience the PS1 classic on modern hardware, which is all that many people really wanted in the first place. It is unfortunately clear that no major effort was made here to make it the ultimate version of the game, as it should always be the case with a PC release. Sure, you can play it at a higher frame rate if you have the hardware for it.
PS5 users can only choose between a 4K 30 mode and a Performance Mode that drops the rendering resolution to x according to Digital Foundry's test to reach 60 frames per second. As per our test, PC users with a top-of-the-line rig can easily expect to play at a locked 4K target. That said, such a high profile release warranted something more.
As new announcements are seemingly coming soon, it won't be long before we learn more about Square Enix's strategy for this generation. We will keep you updated on the games coming from the Japanese publisher as soon as possible, so stay tuned for all the latest news. For now, none of this has been confirmed and it's laced with speculation. That said, it's not looking good for Final Fantasy fans on Xbox. From the sounds of it, these fans will need to either fork out for a PS5 or for a gaming PC.
At the moment of publishing, all of this ranges from unofficial to speculative so take it all with a grain of salt. Of course, Square Enix could squash all of this scuttlebutt with a comment or its own official information, but so far it's opted to stay silent on the matter and we don't expect this to change, but if it does, we will update the story accordingly.
